Toshio Shibata, The Abstraction of Space

Polka Galerie, Paris, 2013

In collaboration with Polka Galerie, I co-curated a solo exhibition of work by Toshio Shibata entitled The Abstraction of Space including both black-and-white and colour prints. For over three decades Shibata has been making large format photographs of landscapes where man encounters nature in the form of infrastructure. Observing a strict principle of excluding the horizon, he produces images that flatten and disrupt our understanding of space. An outstanding photographic technician, Toshio Shibata moved definitively from black and white to colour in 2005, developing a new photographic language with images resembling hybrid, almost abstract collages.
